The reader State of the Nation reflects multiple experiences of not belonging in the nationally prescribed sense, and instead explores the heights and abysses of the in-between: through movement and migration, through doubts about the prospects of the war, through a longing for forms of political subjectivity that are not organised along national lines. It questions traditions that have long served as carriers of national sentiment in Germany since the Nazi era; reflects on the relationship between decoloniality and nationalism in the contemporary art world; uses counter-mapping to understand the political imagination of ancient Mediterranean societies; searches for possibilities of mini-solidarities between Estonians and Russophone Estonians in Narva; delves into new forms of artistic mentorship that help to escape the shackles of the postcolonial era in Ghana; and playfully reflects on the Minute of Silence in Ukraine—a nationwide ritual recently enshrined in law.
